Hi, I'm Judy Ames with KARAOKEMANIA and the Karaoke
Workshop. For those
of you who don't know me personally, I would like you to know that music
has
always been the love of my life. After spending many years singing in
bands
and in musical theater, I started my own business...as a Karaoke host! Now
I
was able to use my experience and knowledge to help others express
themselves
and enjoy music. I myself, have also enjoyed watching the progress of so
many
singers, and sharing the fun and fellowship we have all gained through the
music. The idea of a Karaoke Workshop got
started not long ago, when a
group of friends came to see me at a Karaoke show I host in La Jolla CA.
They
were not really familiar with Karaoke, and I wasn't sure how they would
react, but I did my best to make them feel comfortable. They loved the
atmosphere and the music, and as the evening progressed, more and more
incredible singers came in and took the mic. As they entertained the crowd
with their talent and passion, I could see the interest and excitement
growing in these newcomers' eyes. My friends were fascinated, and even
though
they weren't willing to sing yet, they stayed the whole night! Of course,
they all told me that they could NOT sing a note, but, as an experienced
host, I didn't buy that!. I knew, eventually, they would not be able to
resist trying, and...I was right! At the end of the evening, they all got
up
and did a couple of group songs from the 60's. The Supreme's "Stop in the
Name
of Love" and that Sonny & Cher duet "I Got You, Babe"
After that, they were exhilarated, and wanted to follow up, so they asked
me if it would be possible to organize a workshop where they could learn
more
about singing, especially on different styles, which keys were best and
how
to choose good songs and practice them. For those of us who go to karaoke
often, we can pick up some of this information from others or from just
being
out there and experimenting. Even so, I know that there are many karaoke
singers who could really get a lot out of this type of workshop.
Think about it, what if you could ask all the questions you were afraid
to ask about karaoke singing? What would YOU want to know? A workshop like
this can be fashioned around everyone's interests, so YOU would find out
the answers!
Now everyone knows that the best way to improve your singing is to go to
a voice teacher. On this matter, I agree wholeheartedly. You take lessons
once a week, and you will learn how to breathe properly, and you will
definitely improve your range and tone. The downside is that not everyone
can
devote the time and money that's necessary for this. And be careful! Not
all
teachers are qualified to help you with popular music. And when it comes
to
performance, very few teachers will even begin to coach you on this.
Because some people want to practice, they buy their own Karaoke systems
just to play around with it at home. This is expensive, but it's really
fun.
Still, when you do this all alone, you miss the social enjoyment, support
and
feedback that other people provide. Once in a while, singers ask me to
explain or suggest something to them. Unfortunately, while I am working
and
running a show, it is really hard to devote the time necessary to answer
and
explain anything . So, when you attend this Karaoke workshop, it is truly
an
opportunity for me as well, to give YOU the personal, attention you really
deserve.

Some of the popular topics requested are : Using a
mic, and how a sound
system works. Then, how to go about choosing and learning songs, studying
and
imitating an artists' style, improving and working with your vocal range,
and
supporting your sound. We will also explore some of the things you believe
about your voice that stop you from singing your best. Even the top
singers
can suffer from stage fright. The ability to "sell" a song and performance
skills are also important subjects. So many people are not necessarily the
greatest singers, but when they put their energy into the song and
especially, if they've got "the moves", everyone loves them!
My friends have been coming back every week, bringing more and more
people with them. They are very enthusiastic and I know they are dying to
really get into singing. My belief is that anyone can learn to sing. So
many
people never really tried until they began at karaoke. There is nothing
better than the glow in someone's eyes when they sing a song in public for
the very first time. Everyone cheers because they know for just a moment,
that someone is a hero, defeating their fears!
Maybe you used to be in a choir, sang folk songs, or played in a rock
band, but now you don't do it anymore. Sometimes you miss it, but there's
not
enough time to do everything. So, once in a while, why not go to Karaoke?
It's great, because you don't even have to know the words. You can sing
any
style -you can be a beginner or a professional, you will always be
appreciated. I've been a karaoke host for 12 years now and when I'm asked,
"Is karaoke is a fad that's losing popularity ?" I always answer; " I
believe
that most people really love to sing, and karaoke is a wonderful
opportunity
to do it." Once you try it, you will be hooked , and you'll want to keep
on
singing !
Karaoke is here to stay! The better singers we
become, the more fun and
pleasure we have. So why not find the answers to all the questions YOU
have
about singing?
If you are listening to this tape, and are not yet comfortable singing in
the karaoke mode, this workshop is for you. If you have been singing
